Harding's saves take Banbury through

Banbury progressed through to the last sixteen in the Southern League Cup when Jack Harding saved two penalties in the shoot-out after 90 minutes. This now makes five penalty saves for Jack so far this season.

United used their squad to give some players a rest – they were without eight regulars in the starting line up – but were still the better team in the first half. They got off to a great start when Ryan Nesbitt opened the scoring in the 5th minute. From the edge of the centre circle he picked up a long clearance from Harding and raced toward the goal before slotting the ball past Myles Bowman in the Beaconsfield goal from the edge of the penalty area.

Banbury weren't in front for long. In the 14th minute, Alex Nolan equalised when he beat Harding to the ball to head home a right-wing cross. The game then turned into something of a stalemate with neither side having much in the way of goal-scoring chances, although Banbury always had the edge. On a tricky surface both sides tried to play controlled football. The referee managed to produce eight yellow cards.

In the second-half, Giorgio Rasulo was brought on to provide a more creativity but the hosts showed more effort, taking the game to United and pushing them back into defensive positions in an effort to get the all-important second goal. Morgan Roberts, brother of Connor, made his debut for Banbury after signing on a youth loan basis and certainly looked useful. It was also good to see Mohammed Ahmed making an appearance after his long injury lay-off.

The game drifted to a draw and a penalty shoot-out. James Taylor got the first spot-kick for the home side, and Charlie Losasso and Shawnikki Clement-Peter scored Beaconsfield's 3rd and 4th kicks, but Harding saved Town's 2nd kick from Brendan Matthew, giving United the edge after Jack Westbrook, Nesbitt, Jaanai Gordon and John Mills had all scored their penalties, even though the unlucky Bowman had managed to get his fingers to two of them, but when Louis Stead saw his fifth penalty saved by Harding, it was Banbury who went into the draw for the 3rd round.
