After already claiming two victories over league leaders Spalding United, Banbury United faced another major test as they welcomed second-placed Harborough Town, a side widely tipped by many to challenge for the title this season. The rearranged fixture proved another statement performance from the Puritans, who extended their excellent run with a deserved victory.
From the opening whistle, Banbury looked the sharper side and immediately began asking questions of the Harborough defence. Inside the sixth minute, the visitors were given an early scare when goalkeeper Elliott Taylor fumbled a dangerous cross-shot from Connor Ferguson at the near post. Chris Wreh reacted quickly to challenge for the loose ball, but Taylor recovered just in time to gather it at the second attempt.
Banbury’s attacking threat was constant throughout the first half. Ferguson impressed down the right flank, while Joel Anker caused problems on the left with his pace and movement, frequently getting the better of the Town back line. Despite dominating large spells of the half and creating the better opportunities, Banbury somehow went into the interval still searching for the breakthrough.
The second half began in a similar fashion to several recent fixtures. Harborough applied early pressure in the opening ten minutes, but Banbury’s defence remained composed and gradually regained control of the game. Former Puritan centre-half Liam Dolman marshalled the Harborough back line well and was involved in numerous clearances, but the visitors still struggled to deal with Banbury’s fluid attacking play.
United continued to build attacks from both wings and through the centre in what was arguably their most complete performance of the season. As the home supporters grew louder and more involved, the team responded by increasing their dominance and intensity. Harborough were rarely allowed time on the ball and struggled to mount meaningful counter-attacks.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 72nd minute. Ferguson once again surged forward on the right and delivered a perfectly weighted pass into the area. Anker timed his run superbly, slipping between two defenders before guiding the ball into the net with the outside of his foot from close range to put Banbury ahead.
With twenty minutes remaining, the Puritans managed the game comfortably. Goalkeeper Jack Harding enjoyed another relatively quiet afternoon, not facing a single shot on target for the third consecutive match. Harborough resorted to launching high balls into the penalty area during the closing stages, but Harding dealt with them confidently, claiming several crosses with assurance.
The final whistle confirmed a well-earned three points for Banbury United, extending their unbeaten run to eight matches. Impressively, the side has now recorded clean sheets in their last four games — a testament to the organisation and determination shown throughout the team, particularly in defence.
