Banbury United Women opened 2026 by claiming their first point of the season with a deserved draw away at Leighton Woodside Wanderers, a result that reflected a committed and improving all-round performance.
The visitors settled quickly and largely shaded the opening half, although clear-cut chances were at a premium for both sides in a cagey contest. Banbury were organised and disciplined, limiting Leighton to few opportunities, but fell behind against the run of play in the 43rd minute when the hosts converted their first effort on goal, a well-struck free kick that gave the goalkeeper little chance.
Undeterred by the setback, United emerged for the second half with renewed energy and purpose. Defensive resilience remained a hallmark of the performance, while confidence grew in possession as Banbury began to create a series of promising chances.
The equaliser arrived in the 75th minute and was the standout moment of the match. A superbly executed counter-attack saw the ball moved swiftly through the thirds, with Kyra Cotter driving the move forward before feeding Alex Pitcher, who in turn found Darcey Cheung. Cheung’s powerful strike left the Leighton goalkeeper beaten and deservedly brought United level.
Buoyed by the goal, Banbury continued to push for a winner and were unfortunate not to find a decisive second as the hosts were forced deeper in the closing stages. When the final whistle sounded, the point felt well-earned and a reward for collective effort and perseverance.
Attention now turns to next week’s home fixture against Thame, where United will be looking to build on this encouraging performance and continue their upward momentum.
