Banbury United suffered a 4–2 defeat away to Peterborough Sports at PIMS Park, in an entertaining contest that remained competitive until the closing stages. Despite creating several promising attacking opportunities, defensive errors and a series of setbacks proved costly for the visitors.
The two sides had met at the same venue just 17 days earlier, and this encounter followed a similarly competitive pattern. However, on this occasion, it was Banbury who conceded a late goal to confirm the outcome, after battling to get back into the match.
Peterborough made an early breakthrough in the fifth minute when Harvey Williams dispossessed his marker near the left-hand corner of the penalty area and played the ball through to former Banbury player Leon Lobjoit. With goalkeeper Jack Harding exposed, Lobjoit calmly finished to give the hosts the lead.
United responded positively, and Josh Smile came close to equalising in the 11th minute with an effort that narrowly cleared the crossbar. Their pressure paid off two minutes later when the Peterborough goalkeeper failed to deal with a corner, allowing AJ George to finish from close range and bring Banbury level.
The hosts regained the lead in the 24th minute with an excellent individual goal. Williams collected possession in his own half, advanced down the right and cut inside before driving a precise left-footed shot into the corner of the net, leaving the Banbury defence unable to intervene.
Alex Prosser went close to restoring parity in the 41st minute as United continued to search for an equaliser. Both sides remained willing to attack, leaving the match finely balanced at the interval.
Banbury’s task became more difficult shortly after half-time. Captain Yaw Ofosu, continuing his return from a lengthy injury absence, was introduced at the break as United changed their defensive formation. Unfortunately, his appearance lasted just four minutes before a hamstring problem forced him off, with Gus Sanches taking his place. The absence of injured left-back Josh Cavallo further limited United’s defensive options.
Peterborough increased their advantage in the 58th minute following good work down the right by Ben Hart and Lee Watkins. Their delivery into the near-post area found Michael Richens, who reacted quickly to turn the ball home and make it 3–1.
Banbury’s problems continued four minutes later when Harrison Mole received two yellow cards in quick succession and was sent off. Jacob Scott was also forced off through injury in the 68th minute, leaving United with limited defensive options for the remainder of the contest.
Despite these setbacks, Banbury continued to press forward and showed considerable determination. Their efforts were rewarded in the 75th minute when Levi Steele scored to reduce the deficit to 3–2, giving the visitors renewed hope of salvaging a result.
Peterborough made several substitutions during the closing stages as they sought to protect their advantage, while Banbury continued to look for an opening. The visitors’ hopes were finally ended in the third minute of stoppage time when Richens scored his second goal of the evening to complete the scoring at 4–2.
There was further late drama when Peterborough captain Jordon Cooke was sent off in the 94th minute, but the hosts had already done enough to secure all three points.
Although Banbury showed resilience in difficult circumstances and created opportunities of their own, defensive lapses and injuries proved decisive. United will be disappointed with the result, while Peterborough’s clinical finishing helped them secure victory in a closely contested encounter.
