Banbury United were left to rue a missed opportunity at Dales Lane after dominating much of the opening 45 minutes, only to surrender their lead and ultimately come away empty-handed.

For the second game running, the Puritans took the lead but were unable to turn their advantage into points. After Oran Jackson had deservedly put United in front, Rushall Olympic levelled on the stroke of half-time before adding two further goals after the break. Joey Evans gave Banbury hope late on, but the home side held on to claim all three points.

The Pics made a lively start, earning three corners inside the opening three minutes, before United won their first flag kick a minute later after Joel Anker and Rico Petterson combined on the left.

In a whirlwind opening, Banbury went close in the fifth minute when Connor Ferguson’s long throw found Oran Jackson, whose header forced Rushall goalkeeper Ollie Taylor into a fine save over the crossbar.

Still without first-choice captains Yaw Ofosu and Alex Prosser through injury, United looked confident and came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock in the eighth minute.

Harrison Mole’s cross from the right picked out young Ben Nash at the near post, and his header beat Taylor but came back off the post before being cleared by a defender.

It was now United who were firmly in control as they attacked with increasing purpose.

Another excellent opportunity arrived in the 16th minute when Mole’s free-kick was delivered to the far post, where Jackson’s point-blank effort was brilliantly saved by Taylor.

The Rushall goalkeeper was called into action again almost immediately, parrying an effort from Petterson as United continued to dominate.

Eight minutes later, Levi Steele delivered another dangerous cross which Nash met with a powerful header, but his effort flew narrowly wide of the upright.

United’s pressure finally paid off in the 27th minute.

A cross from Aaron McCreadie was met at the far post by Jackson, who headed home to give Banbury a deserved 1–0 lead.

The Puritans remained in control and looked comfortable, with Rushall struggling to create any sustained pressure.

The home side’s first real opening came in the 39th minute when Luke Yates sent Alex Moore through, but United defended well to block the effort.

Then, against the run of play, Rushall drew level in the 45th minute.

Moore produced a deft finish which nestled into the corner of the net, with the equaliser coming from what was the Pics’ first shot on target of the entire first half.

Banbury started the second period positively and came close to regaining the lead five minutes after the restart.

Anker embarked on a fine solo run which ended with Taylor again coming to Rushall’s rescue, tipping the ball around the post for a corner.

However, just three minutes later, the game took a dramatic turn.

United’s defence was unable to deal with the danger and left-back Carter Lycett cut inside before unleashing a superb 20-yard strike into the far corner. Jack Harding was given no chance as Rushall took a 2–1 lead.

Having been in control for long spells of the first half, Banbury suddenly found themselves chasing the game.

Their difficulties increased further in the 64th minute when the centre of the United defence opened up, allowing Yates a clear route through the middle. He made no mistake, firing a 20-yard effort beyond Harding to give Olympic a 3–1 advantage.

Banbury responded by introducing Jash Cavallo and Joey Evans as they looked for a way back into the contest.

The changes helped inject fresh energy into the United attack, and the Puritans reduced the deficit when Evans rose to meet a Mole cross and headed home.

With the score now 3–2, Banbury pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Rushall managed the closing stages effectively.

Four substitutions by the home side during the final 15 minutes also disrupted the flow of the game, and Olympic were able to see out the remaining minutes to secure the points.

For Banbury, the result was a particularly frustrating one given their performance before half-time. United had created several good opportunities, controlled large periods of the opening 45 minutes and deservedly taken the lead.

But Rushall’s equaliser just before the interval changed the momentum, and two defensive lapses after the break allowed the home side to turn the game around.

There were certainly positives for the Puritans to take from their attacking play and first-half performance, but once again the fine margins proved costly. United will know that opportunities to take points from games like this cannot be allowed to slip away.
