WORCESTER CITY 0 BANBURY UNITED 1

After two frustrating weeks of inactivity due to unplayable pitches, Banbury United were delighted when an 11am inspection declared the surface fit at the impressive Sixways Stadium. The warm welcome extended by Worcester City was a credit to the club and set the tone for an enjoyable afternoon.

Both sides started brightly, looking to make an early statement. The first real chance arrived in the ninth minute when former Puritan Charlie Wise met a cross with a firm header, only for United skipper Jack Harding to react sharply and tip the ball over the bar. Worcester keeper Sam Kane was called into action almost immediately at the other end, producing an equally fine save to deny Connor Ferguson by flicking his effort over the crossbar.

United continued to probe, and in the 14th minute Joel Anker delivered a dangerous cross from the left that found Peter Abimbola, but his goal-bound effort was bravely charged down. Despite the early exchanges, clear-cut chances were limited as both defences held firm. Harding was the busier of the two goalkeepers, though Banbury’s back line remained composed. Worcester’s best opportunity of the half came in the 36th minute when Nathan Hayward, after Dan Sweeney had seen a shot blocked, fired well wide when well placed. The hosts shaded the first half, but United reached the interval with their defensive discipline intact.

Banbury emerged with renewed purpose after the break and began to show greater intent going forward. Six minutes into the second half, full-back Shay Palmer joined the attack and found himself in space, but his effort sailed over the bar. Worcester responded in the 64th minute with a slick move down the right involving Charlie Lutz and Sweeney, only for Harding to produce another excellent save.

As the half progressed, United grew in confidence. Alex Prosser went close from a 68th-minute free-kick, his powerful strike just clearing the crossbar. The decisive moment arrived in the 76th minute. Abimbola won possession in midfield and released Ferguson on the right edge of the penalty area. The winger drove inside before curling a superb left-footed effort around Kane, the ball kissing the inside of the post on its way in, a goal of real quality and worthy of winning any match.

Worcester responded with urgency. In the 80th minute, a free-kick was drilled into United’s defensive wall, and moments later Sweeney unleashed a spectacular 25-yard effort that crashed against the upright before being cleared. Late pressure continued, with Kyle Belmonte firing narrowly wide in the 89th minute, but Banbury held firm to secure a hard-fought and valuable victory.
