Match Report, 14 Feb - Banbury 3 Easington 3

. Banbury United15 Feb 2023 - 07:24

Match conceded prior to Extra Time

Banbury’s team was made up of just eleven players including goalkeeper coach Liam Shea. They were missing a number of players through injury, unavailability and being ineligible having signed after the deadline for the original tie, two weeks previously. However, with the unlikely sight of 300+ appearance goalkeeper Jack Harding wearing the number 16 shirt and playing at centre-forward, United showed the early ascendency and Craig Hewitt went close in the 10th minute with a shot that was just too high. However, two minutes later, Banbury took the lead when Hewitt latched onto a pass from Harding and hit the ball home from just inside the penalty area.

United continued to cause the Easington back-line a few problems, and they went further ahead in the 32nd minute when Jaanai Gordon finished off a good move with a great curling shot from the edge of the penalty area which flew into the opposite corner of the net, giving Joe White no chance with the placing of the shot.

Easington came out for the second-half and looked a lot more lively, and they pulled a goal back in the 71st minute when James Watts struck from 10 yards. They then rattled the Banbury crossbar just six minutes later as they pushed for the equaliser. However, just three minutes later, Harding was unlucky when he saw his shot well saved by White as the ‘keeper pushed the ball around the post for a corner. Jack’s outfield debut for United was completed when, from the ensuing corner, he first had a shot charged down but he was the first to react as he thumped the rebound home from 8 yards to put Banbury 3-1 in front, and to register his first goal for the Club. Banbury then went a man down when Alex Babos was forced to retire injured, and with no substitutes available United went down to ten men. Former Banbury striker Leam Howards pulled a goal back in the 87th minute and substitute Jack Fountain got the equaliser in the 91st minute to put the game into extra-time. With players carrying injuries Banbury conceded the tie to Easington at this stage.
