United equalled their all-time record when they stretched their opening season unbeaten run to 13 games in all competitions against a spirited Nuneaton Borough side that had been reduced to ten men for the greater part of the game.
Banbury went close in the 20th minute when young work-experience addition Will Taylor, making his debut at left back, from Cheltenham Town, sent over a cross from the left which was met at the far post by Chris Wreh, but Damian McCrory cleared his effort off the goal-line to save the day for Borough.
Basically, the Nuneaton team in general tried to use ‘rough house’ tactics against Banbury from the start, it was of no surprise when their captain Carl Baker got an early yellow card, and after a serious talking to a few minutes later, unprofessionally got his second yellow, and therefore a red card in the 24th minute to earn a deserved sending off. How on earth they didn’t get any more yellow cards in the first half, only the referee knew as they continually kicked ‘anything that moved’ throughout the rest of the half. In the 28th minute, Morgan Roberts forced Borough ‘keeper, Tony Breeden to produce a fantastic fingertip save to tip the ball over the bar for a corner, as United tried to capitalise on their one man advantage.
Five minutes before half-time, it was Nuneaton’s turn to threaten the goal-less situation when they were awarded a free kick, 25 yards out and Luke Benbow was very unlucky when his fierce effort cannoned off the crossbar with Jack Harding well beaten.
In the second-half, the visitors started to concentrate on playing football, and quickly began to cause Banbury some problems. In fact, although United had something of a re-shuffled defence, they did well to keep Nuneaton at bay as they fought to keep their clean sheet intact, and at times it seemed something of a miracle to understand how the Borough could be bottom of the League, as they were proving to be one of the hardest teams that United have played this season. However, the turning point of the game arrived in the 78th minute when Wreh took control of the ball in the centre circle, and using his vast experience, kept his marker at bay as he neared the Borough goal, and he confidently slipped the ball past Breeden from the edge of the penalty area to put Banbury ahead, with what proved to be the only goal of the game. Nuneaton must have been very disappointed after their performance in the second-half, playing well over an hour with a man missing.
