MATCH REPORT: AFC Sudbury 1-2 Banbury United

. Banbury United4 Jan - 19:02

The Puritans took all three points on a freezing afternoon in Suffolk to kick off 2025.

New signing Dan Jarvis was making his debut after joining United from Kettering Town, and what a brilliant debut he enjoyed, being involved for both of Banbury’s goals. Banbury started the game in great fashion, and soon put the home side under pressure with their fast forward play. They had the ball in the net initially in the 10th minute when Jarvis received the ball on the left with a beautiful crossfield pass, and coolly moved into the penalty area before simply clipping the ball over the Sudbury ‘keeper James Bradbrook, and into the empty net. Unfortunately, the assistant signalled offside and the effort was disallowed.

Banbury went close in the 12th minute when Tai Fleming’s header from a right-sided corner was caught just under the bar by Bradbrook. Just sixty seconds later Jarvis went close when his shot from the left was charged down by Thomas Dickens. However, Banbury’s pressure had to tell, and in the 23rd minute they took the lead in brilliant fashion. From another corner, Jarvis delivery was met by Yaw Ofosu who powerfully headed home, in front of the United supporters behind the goal.

Banbury were now pushing for a second goal before the interval, and they again went close in the 33rd minute from Connor Stanley and four minutes later from that man Dan Jarvis again. Banbury were now on top and the second goal came in the 42nd minute. Jarvis took control of the ball as he raced down the middle from around 40 yards out, and in a great show of individual skill, jinked inside his marker and planted the ball wide of Bradbrook to increase the scoreline.

Sudbury looked brighter after the break and pushed Banbury back somewhat. United's best chance in the second half came in the 56th minute, Teddy Rowe going close and moments later Jaanai Gordon saw his header go just too high after good work from Harry Reilly and Connor Stanley on the right. This was followed by a noticeable lull in the game until stoppage time, with the home side converting their only shot on target in the 93rd minute, courtesy of Liam Pearce. United held on to secure a 2-1 victory on the road, and back-to-back league wins.

On this showing, Banbury would look to give anyone in the league a strong test.
