About John

Many supporters know John Brambley from his many visits to The Spencer Stadium from his home in Perth West Australia. In fact, he was with us for our first few pre-season friendlies. John was born in Banbury in 1942 and has lived in Perth since 1970.

As well as ongoing contributions to The Spencer Villa Fund, John has contributed to a long list of fundraising projects at the ground since the Community Benefit Society was formed in 2015.

Away from Banbury United, John enjoyed distance running with the W A Marathon Club and W A Masters Athletic Club, of which he has been a member for 25 years. During this time, he ran with several top Australian athletes in their later years, as well as British runner, Cecil Walkley, who with Chris Brasher and Chris Chataway trained with Roger Banister when he broke the 4-minute mile in 1954!

A race John enjoyed in the UK was the Hook Norton 6 miler in 2002 except that he was due back at work in Fremantle 3 days later rather jet lagged. These days he is happy to walk the Parkrun course on a Saturday with the many miles of running behind him.

John followed the form of his grandson, Keiran (15), who competed in the Malaysia Championships recently in 5km and 1,500 m races, returning with two silver medals. At age 12, in Brisbane, he became the Australian Junior Race Walk Champion over 3 km.

Superior Fast Food was established in Banbury Market Place in 1998 by Lena and Michael Plaice and is now owned by their daughter Sharon and son-in-law Elliott.

The family connection with Banbury United goes back to the very beginning of the Club, to 1931, where it was then known as Banbury Spencer. Sharon’s dad, grandparents, and even great grandad were season ticket holders.

Michael Plaice and John Brambley met over 80 years ago when they both lived in Crouch Street, Banbury, and have remained lifelong friends.

In 1948 they both attended St Johns school in the Oxford Road. A teacher there was Jim McCarthy who played for Spencer and perhaps this sowed the seed for their long association with the club.
