Please find below, information sent to us by Oxfordshire County Council in relation to changes in access to Banbury railway station (Tramway Road improvements), which affects Station Approach, the road to the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium.
Work starts on 21 October 2024. We will keep spectators updated in our match previews, if there are any particular issues that day, which affect access and journey times to the ground.
While journey routes and methods may be affected, the stadium will remain accessible at all times by car and on foot. The key message is to leave more time.
---
We are writing to update you on plans to improve access to Banbury railway station and improve the road layout, facilities and connectivity between southern Banbury and the town centre.
The work involves linking the existing Tramway Road with Station Approach Road and the station forecourt using a new roundabout. This will create an alternative route to the station west car park and a link past the station for buses and taxis. We are also providing new bus stops, cycleways and footways.
We plan to start work on 21 October this year. This letter outlines what you can expect, how your journeys may be affected and how you can find out more.
You are welcome to drop in to our public information event on 30 October 2024 to see the plans in detail, ask questions and plan your journey. We will be at Banbury Town Hall, from 3pm to 7pm.
Tramway Road footpath closed – 24 October 2024 to April 2025
Phase one of work
We will set up our site cabins and compound from 21 October and begin construction from 4 November 2024. We will start with work to dig up the existing surface, and to divert drainage, utility ducts, chambers and cables.
Pedestrians, cyclists and those being dropped off by car will have no access to the station using Tramway Road from 24 October 2024 to April 2025, because we need to close part of the footpath.
Pedestrians and cyclists will only be able to enter the station building using Bridge Street and Station Approach Road. Those who usually travel to the station by Tramway Road will be diverted by Swan Close, the A4260, Bridge Street and Station Approach Road. (See map).
We estimate that this diversion will take about 20 minutes to walk. As your journey may take longer than usual, please leave plenty of time to reach your destination.
If you are walking to the station, temporary signs will direct you to the entrance, exit and car park. Temporary ramps will be provided where there are surface level changes. We will also provide a pedestrian route through the car park from the station to the Network Rail depot for employees.
Remaining phases of work – November 2024 to September 2025
Phases one and two will overlap, with work to construct the new northeast section of Tramway Road (surface and footpath) and the new roundabout taking place from late 2024 to spring 2025.
Part of Station Approach Road will be closed from November 2024 with traffic diverted through the station car park.
Phases three and four will involve constructing the improved Station Approach Road and car park.
Construction is expected to finish with phase five ending in September 2025. Some of the detail may change and we will keep you updated as we make progress.
When finished, the improvements will include:
This work should contribute to reducing congestion along Cherwell Street and at the A4260/Bridge Street junction, reduce bus journey times as they travel towards the station, provide better access to station car parking for residents to the south of the town, and reduce traffic congestion for customers accessing the car park to the north of the station.
