Banbury remain on course for third place after 3-1 win at Milton United

Saturday 23rd April 1994 and Banbury United were away to mid-table Milton United in an Hellenic Premier Division game, looking for the three points which would maintain their challenge for third place. On a pitch which was a great improvement on a lot of others that Banbury had played on recently, including their own, both teams were able to play attractive football.

On 20 minutes a Banbury corner was only half cleared out as far as Phil Houghton whose 25 yard effort hit the bar and they would hit the woodwork again in the 34th minute when a Dean Hill through ball was pounced upon by Paul Warrington whose narrow angled shot from eight yards hit the near post. However, with Banbury dominating play they would finally take a deserved lead two minutes before half-time when Warrington crossed from the by-line for Hill to slot the ball home from six yards.

Banbury increased their lead three minutes after the interval when Ian Bowyer headed home a Phil Houghton cross from six yards. On the hour Milton pulled a goal back from the penalty spot but Banbury restored their two goal lead a quarter of an hour from time, Warrington bringing the ball down the right and beating two defenders before lobbing the ball over the home custodian from a narrow angle some eight yards out into the top corner of the net.

Banbury United: Tim Williams, Phil Houghton, Gary Wanless, Paul Warrington, Neil Sole, Ian Bowyer, Dave Bristow, Dean Hill, John Evans, Martin Singleton, Jody McKay. Subs (not used) Jake Tyrell, Rhydian Purnell.

Banbury with a team of local players and under the guidance of former player Wally Hastie finished the season in third place.

Photos show two of the goalscorers that afternoon. Ian Bowyer who made 556 appearances for the club, scoring 46 goals, quite an impressive goal tally for a central defender and Paul Warrington who scored 42 goals for the club from 225 appearances.
