Saturday 14th April 1973 – Tony Foster inspires second half revival

Banbury United travelled to Suffolk to take on Bury Town in a Southern League Division One North game on Saturday 14th April 1973. Bury went ahead five minutes before the interval through player/manager Albert Bennett but it was Tony Foster’s never-say-die attitude that inspired Banbury to a tremendous second half revival. The United talisman equalised in the 62nd minute and put the finishing touch to Banbury’s comeback win when converting a penalty-kick six minutes from time.

Banbury United: Stewart Rennie, Pete Svenson, Bob Haynes, Colin Moulsdale, Ken Butler, Dave Matthews, Paul Day, Tony Foster, Tony Jacques, Gino Crognale, Mick Sherrell. Sub: Mick Worthington.

Manager Brian Stone had brought Tony Foster back to the Spencer Stadium at the start of this season, 1972/73, partnering Tony Jacques upfront. Foster would score 35 goals for the club that season whilst Jacques scored 26. Though the partnership didn’t translate into better than a mid-table league placing, it certainly had great success in cup competitions. That season the club had a superb run in the FA Cup reaching the First Round Proper for just the third time in the club’s then 40-year history, and for the first time since becoming Banbury United in 1965, before bowing out to Barnet. There was also an excellent draw against Wimbledon at their impressive Plough Lane Ground in the FA Trophy, Foster scoring in the 1-1 draw. And there was a first ever win over Oxford United in the Oxford Professional Cup – Foster getting one of the three goals in a 3-1 win, the other two coming from current Banbury United board member Paul Duester.
