Due to injuries, the need to give some players game time, and the departure of Glenn Walker to local rivals Brackley Town there were a number of changes to the Banbury side that had played at Frome Town on Saturday.
City went ahead after 15 minutes through Mark Bell and certainly had the better of the half but the complexion of the game changed in a two minute spell just before the interval. Firstly Simeon Williams equalised form the penalty spot after Ricky Johnson had been brought down before, just two minutes later, Danny Edmond fired United in front.
Though City had a lot of posession in the second half, Banbury seemed to be coping reasonably well and looked to be on course for victory in normal time until, with just seven minutes left, Felipe Barcelos fired the ball past Max Crocombe to bring the scores level. At this point United were then rather fortunate to get through to the end of normal time without conceding again as City dominated proceedings and looked likely to grab the winner.
Banbury did recover their composure in extra time though City came closest to scoring in the first period when they hit the post.
However, four minutes into the second period of extra time, Ricky Johnson was held down by a defender inside the penalty area. The refereee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot and Johnson converted the spot-kick himself with some aplomb to take United through to the quarter-finals.
