Banbury United striker Ricky Johnson made his 250th appearance for the Puritans in Monday’s 2-1 win over Barwell

Ricky originally came through the Banbury United youth and reserve sides and made his first team debut for the club when coming on as a substitute in a Buckingham Charity Cup game at Stony Stratford back in October 2005.

After making a few more first team appearances he left the club to play regular first team football with Easington Sports, Witney United, Hook Norton and Woodford United. He returned to the Spencer Stadium in December 2011 scoring 19 goals in 42 appearances before leaving in September 2012 for Leamington where he helped them to win the Southern League Championship in 2012/13 before playing the following season for the Brakes in Conference North.

After spending season 2014/15 playing for Hellenic League Premier Division side Ardley United, he re-joined Banbury for his third spell in the summer of 2015 and played a key part in the club’s promotion winning campaign of 2015/16, scoring 26 Southern League South & West goals in 41 games as the club earned a place in the Premier Division through the play-offs.

Ricky has now scored 93 goals for the club in his 250 appearances, despite playing a number of games in central defence, and is thus not far short of the magical 100 goals for Banbury United which, since the club was renamed in 1965 from Banbury Spencer, only four players have achieved, those being Tony Jacques, Jody McKay, Tony Foster and Matty Gooderick.

Picture above shows Banbury United Commercial Director Mark Allitt making a presentation to Ricky on behalf of the club in recognition of his 250th appearance for the club before Monday’s game against Barwell, alongside club mascot Spencer the Puritan.
