August’s Volunteer of the Month has been awarded to Roger Davis, for his brainchild – a
shop at the Banbury Plant Hire Community Stadium that sells historic match day
programmes.
Roger, a long-time volunteer for the Club’s grounds team, came up with the idea following
donations to the Club of so many football programmes from supporters, as well as from
families of recently departed Puritans.
Many of the programmes feature Banbury United games – some going back nearly 50 years!
Yet also on display are programmes from Non-league, Football League, Premiership, and
international fixtures: one particularly poignant example is the programme that was produced for the late Sven-Göran Eriksson’s first-ever match as England manager.
Wayne Farrell, Banbury United Chairman, said: “The Club relies on volunteers: for Roger to
come up with this great initiative adds value to the match day experience. We hope we will
attract people from all over the country to come and visit and have a browse. Roger fully
deserves the award for his efforts and hard work.”
The shop, located at the stadium’s Town End, next to the John Nicholls stand, was
converted by Roger, who created and installed all of the display fixtures and fittings. You can
also admire Roger’s talent by viewing – and purchasing – his silhouette animals – which he
creates from dis-used pitch-side advertising boards and banners. They are great fun, ideal
for home or garden, and represent a unique way of supporting the Club.
Programmes are mostly displayed in alphabetical order, by club name. Prices start from
£1.00 each, with a Bargain Buy of 10 for just £5.00 (excluding rarer items that are priced
individually). Programme collectors will be surprised how many different club programmes
are on show; while for many supporters it is a chance to buy a programme that covers a
particular game that they recall from the past.
The programme shop is open on match days 90 minutes before kick-off, throughout half-time
and for 30 minutes after the game. Cash and cards are accepted.
All proceeds from the programme shop go to Banbury United.
