Roy joined Third Division South side Coventry City from Stratford Town in May 1956.
He made 10 Football League appearances for the Sky Blues in season 1956/57, playing at right half, before joining another Third Division South side, Bournemouth, in July 1957. However he failed to make a first team league appearance for Bournemouth and left them in February 1958 to move to yet another Third Division South side, Gillingham.
Whilst only making two appearances for the Gills in the remainder of season 1957/58 he established himself as a regular in their side during seasons 1958/59 to 1961/62 inclusive making 143 Football League appearances for them and scoring 2 goals. He played in his time at Gillingham primarily at right full back but also played in a number of positions in the half back line. He was known as “Chopper” Proverbs whilst at Gillingham on account of his style of play!
Roy then dropped down to non-league, playing for Canterbury City, Tunbridge Wells United and King’s Lynn before joining Banbury United from the latter in the summer of 1965.
Season 1965/66 was United’s last in the West Midlands League and he was a regular at full back in the side that finished third which, with off the field developments, was enough to earn the club election to the Southern League for the start of the following season.
Roy played in the first ten Southern League games of the season, that included the club’s first ever Southern League game against Ramsgate Athletic at the Spencer Stadium on Saturday 20th August 1966, but the tenth, a home game to Crawley Town on Saturday 8th October 1966 was his last for the club as he had his contract terminated at his request stating that he wanted to “call it a day”.
Roy made a total of 58 appearances for the club.
Banbury United would like to send their condolences to all of Roy's family and friends
