Banbury were just seconds away from going straight through to the next round but a second minute stoppage time goal means the two sides must try again on Tuesday evening to earn their passage.

Banbury made a good start and as early as the third minute an in-swinging corner from Darius Browne clipped the crossbar before being palmed away by the veteran goalkeeper Kevin Sawyer. Banbury continued to have the better of the game but should certainly have gone behind in the 29th minute when Evesham were awarded a penalty kick for a foul. However, Leigh Bedwell pulled off a good save low down to his right from Ashley Edenborough's spot-kick.

Evesham would though not have long to wait until taking the lead as in the 40th minute a quickly taken free-kick on the right and the cross came in from George Washbourne and Harry Williams struck the ball home from close range.

The first ten minutes of the second half were dominated by Evesham but this all changed on 58 minutes when a Jacob Walcott cross from wide on the right was headed home at the far post by Darius Browne.

Evesham were then reduced to ten men on 66 minutes when Edenborough was shown a straight red card for a poor challenge on David Lynn.

Banbury would go in front on 72 minutes when a good passing move down the left ended with Browne putting Adeyinka Talabi through on goal and with just Sawyer to beat he competently slotted the ball home from 12 yards.

Evesham pushed players forward in search of an equaliser as time was running out and in the 90th minute Marcus Jackson in acres of space on the edge of the penalty area had a glorious chance to level the game but shot high over the bar.

The miss looked like it meant it was going to be Banbury’s day but two minutes into stoppage time an Evesham in-swinging free-kick from the left by Washbourne delivered into a packed penalty area, with everyone from the home side up, including the custodian, saw Matt Sysum touch the ball home.

Banbury were much improved after equalising in the second half, even before having the benefit of a man advantage, though it was of course very frustrating to concede an equaliser so late which means the two sides meet again at the Spencer Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Whether the draw at Evesham is seen as a good result though very much depends on the outcome of Tuesday’s replay!
