United got off to the worst of starts as after just 50 seconds they went behind when Andy Fowler knocked the ball from the half way line through to Christian Langos who in on goal and with just Leigh Bedwell in the Banbury goal to beat slotted the ball under the custodian from 12 yards.

Just a minute late and United came close to equalising when a corner from the right taken by Aidan Hawtin fell to Josh Shama in a crowded penalty area but his shot from six yards went wide.

After this dramatic opening the game settled down.

In the 14th minute an excellent cross field pass from Carl Tappin on the right over to Adeyinka Talabi on the left saw him bring the ball inside before passing back to Tappin who had moved forward to the edge of the penalty area, his shot then bringing out a decent save from Matthew Cooper in the Marine goal low down to his right.

United would then draw level in the 19th minute when Josh Shama crossed from the right bye-line on the edge of the penalty area with Talabi coming in and heading the ball home from inside the six yard box.

Less than two minutes later and Banbury were ahead. Shama picked up the ball on the left, cut inside and took it to the edge of the Marine penalty area, his low shot then took a minor deflection before hitting the near post and nestling into the back of the net.

In the 38th minute United would grab themselves a two goal cushion when Jordan Green went on a run down the left before slipping the ball inside to Talabi who then lifted the ball over Cooper from a narrow angle from just outside the six yard box.

Two minutes later though and Marine had reduced the deficit to just a single goal once more. A free-kick from the half way line was pumped into the Banbury penalty area. The ball was only cleared as far as Jonathan Goulding in a central position 15 yards out who in space struck the ball into the corner of the net.

Eight minutes into this period the ball fell to Green in a central position 25 yards out and he took the ball forward to inside the Marine penalty area leaving a couple of defenders in his wake but having done exceptionally well to create the chance put the ball wide from six yards.

On the hour mark there was a nervous moment for Banbury when the ball fell to Thomas Owen on the edge of the penalty area and though he did not connect properly with his shot, the ball ballooned up into the air and looked to be heading for the top corner of the net before Bedwell got back to tip it over the bar.

A minute later Banbury went close to scoring a second when a long clearance from deep inside his own half by Talabi set Green away down the left who then used his pace to get the better of Stephen Wainwright before his shot from eight yards hit the side netting.

Matters got more difficult for Marine after 67 minutes when Neil Harvey was sent off for throwing a punch. The visitors didn’t really threaten from this point on and United could have made the scoreline more emphatic two minutes into stoppage time when a poor clearance from Karl Clair went to Tappin midway inside the Marine half who then took the ball forward beating James Foley with some fancy footwork before shooting from the edge of the penalty area just inches wide of the post.

Over the course of the 90 minutes United were deserved winners and they now await Monday’s Third Qualifying Round, the stage at which the Conference North and Conference South clubs enter.
