South Midlands League Division One side Buckingham Athletic will go into the second leg of the semi-final of the Buckingham Charity Cup, on a date to be arranged, with a two goal advantage after this 2-0 win over United at Stratford Fields this evening.

Banbury should have gone ahead in the 16th minute. Jacob Daffern was brought down inside the Athletic penalty area but Jacob Walcott saw his penalty kick saved by the legs of Andy Hammond.

Ten minutes later it was the home side’s turn at taking a penalty after a handball offence. This time the spot-kick was converted, Matt Cruise showing United how it should be done.

The nearest United came to equalising in the remainder of the half was in the 33rd minute when a corner from the left taken by Aaron Weston was met by Nathaniel Lewars six yards out but his header went into the ground and then bounced up over the bar.

United were better in the second half. On 52 minutes a throw in from the left taken by Luke Cray went through to Lewars just eight yards out but he blasted his shot well over the bar. With a quarter of an hour to go Daffern shot just wide from 12 yards and then on 88 minutes a Marvin Martin shot from 25 yards went just inches over the bar.

However in the fifth minute of stoppage time, Athletic would grab a second goal when a cross came in from the right and Phil Martin was on hand to strike the ball home.
