The game began with both sides creating chances in the first five minutes. In the third minute North Leigh's Kieran Sanders was put through by Jamie Cook but his shot from just inside the penalty area was put wide as Leigh Bedwell in the Banbury goal came out to narrow the angle. Two minutes later a Hicham Abdellah low cross from the left went through to the incoming Jacob Daffern in space at the far post but the Milton Keynes Dons loanee failed to connect properly and the chance was put wide.

However, in the eight minute North Leigh would take the lead through Cook when he headed home at the near post a left wing cross from Michael Hopkins.

United went close to equalising in the 16th minute when a corner was cleared out only as far as Kynan Isaac on the right whose cross found Jack Westbrook, still up from the flag-kick, in space at the far post but his header from a narrow angle went just over the bar.

It didn’t though look good for United by the midway point of the first half as in the 21st minute North Leigh had made it 2-0 when Stuart Hole crossed low into the centre from the right with the ball being controlled by Cook eight yards out who then laid the ball back to Kieran Sanders who had time to pick his spot and strike the ball low into the bottom corner of the net from 12 yards past Bedwell.

However, United were back in the game just three minutes later when Isaac's cross field pass from the right set Hicham Abdellah away down the left who got the better of Hole before crossing low into the centre where Isaac had run forward to be in a position to receive the ball back only to be brought down inside the penalty area by Aaron Woodley. Jacob Walcott competently converted the spot-kick low into the corner of the net to the goalkeeper's left.

United would draw level in the 34th minute. An Isaac free-kick from the half way line on the left was pumped into the North Leigh penalty area but only headed away as far as Jacob Walcott on the right whose cross back into the centre was met with a superb volley by Westbrook from 22 yards which flew into the top left hand corner of the net giving Bulman no chance

Though three minutes into the second half an Isaac free-kick from 25 yards had to palmed away from the top corner of the net by the North Leigh custodian, it was the West Oxfordshire side that had the better of the opening quarter of an hour of the second half.

Nevertheless, on the hour mark it would be Banbury who would go in front for the first time in the game when a free-kick from deep inside his own half by Joel Meade was pumped to the edge of the North Leigh penalty area and with the ball not being fully cleared it was picked up by Carl Tappin on the edge of the penalty area whose neat reverse pass set up Leam Howards whose shot from a narrow angle from six yards seemed to virtually go through Bulman into the back of the net.

North Leigh were back on level terms in the 74th minute when a low cross in from the left from Kieran Sanders went through to Callum McNish who struck the ball home from six yards out. Then eight minutes later McNish scored again to make it 4-3 when some less than impressive defending allowed him to pick up the ball 25 yards out, though his strike from that distance was superb as it flew into the top right hand corner of the net giving Bedwell no chance.

It looked as though the Senior Cup was destined for North Leigh but in the final minute of normal time, Tom Ryan, pushed forward for the final minutes, headed home a Hicham Abdellah cross.

There was still time for a couple of scares for Banbury though as in stoppage time Sanders shot just over from the edge of the area and in the dying seconds there was an almighty scramble in the Banbury penalty area but no one could put the finishing touch to the ball and the referee immediately blew his whistle for full time as the ball was finally hacked clear.

Extra time was relatively uneventful in terms of chances though two minutes from the end of the second period Bedwell had to scramble back to tip over a 35 yard shot from Sanders over the bar but with no goals in the extra period it was penalties to decide the destination of the Senior Cup.

North Leigh’s first penalty, taken by Stuart Hole, was saved by Bedwell but Jacob Walcott’s first for Banbury received the same treatment from Bulman.

The next six penalties were all converted, Jamie Cook, Elliott Osbourne-Ricketts and Matt Bulman for North Leigh and Kynan Isaac, Jack Westbrook and Carl Tappin for Banbury.

North Leigh’s fifth penalty from Morgan Williams was saved by Bedwell and then Joel Meade smashed his spot-kick into the top corner of the net to spark off United celebrations.
