Banbury started the better of the two sides. Ricky Johnson shot wide from 15 yards out in the sixth minute and in the twelfth minute Zac McEachran put Leam Howards through just ahead of a defender but his shot was well saved by Ben John as he came out to narrow the angle.
Banbury continued to dominate the play though Paulton went close in the 25th minute when a free-kick from the right was headed down from close range with the ball bouncing up and hitting the bar.
Paulton had a better spell at this point and the game became more even but it was Banbury who finished the half on top. There were a couple of corners in quick succession which put pressure on the home defence an on 41 minutes Howards wriggled his way through to the edge of the Paulton area before forcing the home custodian to make a save low down to his left.
However, the game remained goalless at the interval
Banbury dominated the opening to the second half, pressing forward. On 58 minutes McEachran took the ball forward from midfield before passing to Browne who shot just wide from the edge of the penalty area. However, United finally got the goal their play deserved a minute later when Howards put through on goal hit a delightful shot from just inside the penalty area on the right with the outside of his foot around the goalkeeper into the far corner of the net.
United would though only be in front for 60 seconds after the re-start as Paulton were back on level terms through Kyle Tooze.
Despite being pegged back Banbury continued to dominate. Browne had an excellent chance to equalise in the 69th minute when he was set up by McEachran but he shot straight at the goalkeeper from six yards.
Banbury were having all the play but just couldn’t find their way through and on 85 minutes paid the price for not being able to press home their dominance with a further goal when a corner from the right fell to Jordan Ricketts just inside the penalty area on the left who struck the ball home low into the corner of the net to put Paulton ahead.
Banbury would go close to equalising a minute from time when a left sided corner taken by McEachran was glanced wide by Andy Gunn from eight yards but there would prove no way through as they pushed forward and it is thus Premier Division Paulton who advance to the Second Round.
Overall this is a game that saw Banbury play some decent football and that they deserved on the balance of play to have won but you have to put the ball into the back of the net when on top to win games and Banbury’s one success at this proved on the night not to be enough.
