David Shadbolt

United win Charity Cup after a 93rd minute equaliser from Ricky Johnson takes the game into extra time.

Brackley Town Saints would have the better of the opening 30 minutes of the first half but this period was rather uneventful in terms of chances. United's best opening in this period came in the 18th minute when Louis Joyce about ten yards outside the Saints penalty area in a central position won the ball in a tackle with a defender, the ball then rolling into the path of Leam Howards who took the ball forward but Dan Farrell in the Brackley goal came to his side's rescue by deflecting the shot from 15 yards by the United striker wide.

Saints would though take the lead in the 37th minute when Matt Hammond was upended just inside the Banbury penalty area. Lewis Baldwin made no mistake firing the spot-kick low to the right of Jack Harding in the Banbury goal into the bottom corner.

Eight minutes into the second half and Harding did well to keep the deficit to a single goal by making an excellent save low down to his right. Banbury then went close on the hour mark but neither Ricky Johnson or Ollie Stanbridge could force the ball home from close range with it bouncing around deep inside the Saints penalty area.

It looked all over for Banbury as the game entered stoppage time at the end of the second half but three minutes into the time added on, substitute Ricky Johnson showed excellent ball control to surge from the edge of the Saints penalty area to about six yards out before he slotted the ball past Farrell and take the game into extra time.

The game now totally changed in complexion with Banbury dominating the first period of extra time. Six minutes into this period Duran Martin shot just wide from the edge of the penalty area but despite the pressure United could not find a way through and it remained 1-1 at half time of extra time.

The second period of extra time started in the same pattern as the first with Banbury very much in the ascendency and it was no surprise when the took the lead in the 111th minute. The goal was created by some excellent play by Ollie Stanbridge down the right wing, rolling back the years to leave the Saints defence all at sea before putting in an excellent cross which saw Johnson's header parried away by the Saints custodian but only as far as the lurking Felipe Barcelos who nodded the ball home from eight yards out.

The win was ensured five minutes from time when Johnson scored his second goal of the game, getting on to the end of a through ball before slotting it home from12 yards.

Overall it was tough on the Brackley Saints side. They had been the better side in the first 90 minutes and Banbury supporters could not have complained about the result if it had stayed 1-0. But Banbury as they have proved throughout the season fight to the end and after the late equaliser they always looked likely winners in extra time
