Banbury ease through in Birmingham Senior Cup

This was Banbury's first foray into the Birmingham Senior Cup for four years, and it turned out to be a hard-working encounter where the visitors overcame their two-division difference in status, and made Banbury fight all the way to get into the last sixteen.

In a first half bereft of any decent chances, United enjoyed the majority of possession but found it difficult to create any goal-scoring opportunities with theor final approach play, not helped with only one natural striker playing because of injuries. However, whilst suffering from these setbacks it did give the manager a chance to give his squad players a run out which they took advantage of.

The second-half saw Banbury's superior fitness make the difference and they soon looked a far better team than they did in the first 45 minutes, pushing forward with a lot more purpose as the midfield started to put more telling crosses into the danger area, making Warwick struggle. Banbury's first chance of the half came in the 59th minute when a right-wing cross fell to Eddie Odhiambo, whose effort went narrowly wide. In the 63rd minute, Anderson then went close from the right when Racing Club 'keeper Charlie Bannister did well to keep his fierce shot out at the near post and then save the rebound from Anderson to thwart the Bolivian midfielder again.

Two minutes later the only goal of the game arrived as United pushed forward, Pablo Haysham hitting a shot from the edge of the area past Bannister to register his first goal of the season in great style.

Haysham then had two good chances to increase his tally in the 70th and 72nd minutes, the first following a Kobe Chong cross from the right which saw his effort just two inches too high, and then from a Denilson Silva cross from the right, which grazed his forehead inside the six-yard box.

Racing Club now tried to go forward in search of an equaliser, but United's defence stood firm and Warwick left a bit more space at the back, giving Banbury a couple more good chances. Denilson went close in the 79th minute when his fierce shot just cleared the crossbar and then in the 89th minute Ryan MacDonald saw his effort well-saved by Bannister.
