Last minute goal sends United out of the Birmingham Senior Cup

Leamington took control of this cup-tie early on and put United under pressure from the opening whistle. They were quicker to the ball and intercepted too many Banbury passes in the first twenty minutes, and it was no surprise when they took the lead in the 24th minute when the speedy Dexter Walters cut in from the left and his effort glanced off the crossbar to Jordan Murphy who headed into the empty net from close in.

This was probably the shock that Banbury needed because they almost immediately started to get into the game and push into more forward positions, and Leamington found that they had a lot less time on the ball than they had been used to. As Banbury pushed forward and showed more confidence both on and off the ball, Leamington started to retreat, and looked decidedly uncomfortable as the game neared half-time and Banbury equalised in the 41st minute. They won a corner on the right and Morgan Roberts' flag-kick to the near post was glanced into his own net by Brakes centre-half and captain James Mace, under heavy pressure from Pablo Haysham.

It was now all Banbury and just one minute later, they went close when John Mills had two shots blocked, and from the rebound, Jaanai Gordon was unlucky when his effort was deflected for a corner. Their persistence paid off though when, in the first minute of first-half injury time, they won another corner and Morgan Roberts kick was badly fumbled by home 'keeper Jake Weaver, and when Gordon's shot was blocked, the loose ball was hammered home by Connor Roberts, inside the six yard box to give Banbury the lead.

Banbury looked good for their lead as the second half progressed, but against the run of play, they failed to clear a Brakes attack and Mace made amends for his earlier own goal by scoring for his own club from close in, giving the home side an unlikely equaliser in the 61st minute.

Still, Banbury looked the more likely of the two teams to get across the line and they should have retaken the lead but Mo Ahmed's low cross was blazed over the bar by Mills. However, it was Leamington substitute Josh March who snatched a last-minute winner that was a calamity for United. They conceded a corner quite needlessly through almost comical errors by Harding and Odihambo. The ball came in and was returned to the taker, Kieran Dunbar. His second effort pinballed around the penalty area until March put an end to the nonsense and fired home.
