Hungerford put Banbury under early pressure and took the lead in the 7th minute when a free-kick from the right taken by Alan O’Brien was headed home in the six yard box by Matt Day

Hungerford continued to dominate and in the 11th minute Charlie Mpi went close heading just wide from a left wing cross.

Banbury gradually though got a foot-hold in the game and though Hungerford were still clearly looking the better side at least as the half wore on there was some promise being shown by Banbury going forward.

However, on 39 minutes it would be 2-0 to Hungerford when the ball came across from the right hand side of the penalty area and was headed home at the far post by Mark Draycott.

It was effectively all over as a contest in the last minute of the half when Charlie Mpi broke through and slotted the ball home past Leigh Bedwell from a narrow angle.

The second half saw Banbury continue to try and play some decent passing football going forward but there were few signs of finding a way through an experienced and well-organised defence.

A fourth goal arrived for Hungerford on 77 minutes when a short free-kick to James Pilling saw him hit a thunderous shot which Leigh Bedwell could not hold and Mark Draycott knocked in the rebound from six yards

Hungerford on this showing look like a team destined for at least the play-offs. They had the experience and quality which proved too much for a very young United side. Banbury’s consolation is that not all the sides they come up against will be as good as Hungerford were on this night.
