United got off to the worst of starts going behind in just the fourth minute when a quickly taken free-kick on the left saw the ball crossed low into the middle where Tom Fishwick in attempting to clear the ball and off-balance managed to put it into his own net.

United had to work hard to stem the Chippenham surging tide but did go close in the 13th minute. A short corner on the right set-up David Lynn on the edge of the home penalty area but his shot was well saved by Kent Kauppinen in the home goal.

From this point on though Chippenham dominated the half and looked dangerous every time they went forward. In the 19th minute a corner from the left led to Luke Ballinger firing just wide from the edge of the area. The home side had the ball in the back of the net on 24 minutes but the assistant referee’s flag was up for off-side.

Chippenham continued to dominate as the half continued with the game being virtually one-way traffic. An overworked Banbury defence finally conceded a second goal on 42 minutes when a cross from the left by James Guthrie went to Alex Ferguson at the far post who had time to bring the ball down and the slot it past Banbury goalkeeper Leigh Bedwell.

Banbury made an improved start to the second half but after a promising first ten minutes Chippenham began to dominate once again. After a period of Chippenham pressure they made it 3-0 on the hour mark when with the United defence unable to clear the ball it then fell nicely to Guthrie who hit an excellent strike from the edge of the penalty area into the back of the net.

It was of course now all over as a contest and though Banbury had their fair share of play in the last half hour the home custodian was not seriously troubled and it finished in a very comfortable 3-0 win for Chippenham.

It may only be 11 days since United’s impressive win at Dunstable Town but with three defeats since it seems an age ago.
