Cambridge City began much the better of the two sides and dominated the opening ten minutes, looking dangerous and it was no surprise when they went ahead at this point when a free-kick from 25 yards out was played short and worked down the right where the ball was crossed low into the middle and Fejiri Okenadirhie was on hand to slot the ball home from five yards out.

United did though respond well to going behind and have a much better spell and it was not totally un expected when they equalised on 21 minutes. A typical Jordan Green mazy run took him inside the Cambridge penalty area where he was brought down. Guy Tahin took the penalty though he was rather fortunate to convert as his low effort hit the post and came out to hit the goalkeeper on the backside and go back over the line.

The equaliser seemed to “wake” City up and they began to dominate proceedings once more. On 25 minutes an Andrew Phillips shot from the edge of the penalty area was deflected just wide and six minutes later a poor back pass let in Okenadirhie but his lob over Bedwell who had come out to the edge of his penalty area did not have the height to trouble the custodian.

To be fair having withstood this period of pressure Banbury had an equal share of the last ten minutes of the half and looked still very much “in the game”

It was all City at the start of the second half and only some last ditch defending and sound handling from Bedwell kept Banbury on level terms. However, it only looked a matter of time before the home side went in front and this they duly did on 62 minutes when a free-kick from wide on the left taken by Josh Dawkin went across the six yard box and into the far corner of the net without anyone touching it.

Just 60 seconds later and it was 3-1 when following a handball offence, the resultant penalty kick was competently converted by Dawkin.

It was all City now and on 68 minutes Dawkin ran through the middle before releasing Phillips who slotted the ball home in a one-on-one with Bedwell.

It got worse for Banbury with Phillips lobbing Bedwell from close-in on 75 minutes and then on 90 minutes a superb strike from 25 yards by Buster Harradine flew into the top corner of the net to make the final score 6-1.

Banbury had done well to come back from the early goal conceded but the second half was a huge disappointment.
