This was a game in which Banbury started the better of the two sides but despite having more possession and it looking positive going forward for them it would be Biggleswade who created the first decent chance when it took a goal line clearance from Tom Ryan in the 11th minute from an Ollie Thorne effort to keep United level. Six minutes later it took a double point blank save from Leigh Bedwell in the Banbury goal to deny the home side.

The very firm pitch and strong wind made it very difficult for both sides and though Biggleswade looked the more likely to score as the half developed clear opportunities for either side were at a premium. In the 37th minute David Hutton shot just wide from the edge of the area for Biggleswade and on 41 minutes a cross coming in from the right was not cleared by the Banbury defence and Bedwell did well to smother a shot from Lee Allinson low down to his left away for a corner.

Whilst Banbury had shown some promise going forward in the first half, it was without doubt Biggleswade who had created the better chances but a failure to finish and some good goalkeeping meant it was 0-0 at half time.

The first ten minutes of the second half would see Banbury have their best spell of the whole game. Hicham Abdellah shot wide from outside the penalty area in the 48th minute and two minutes later a Leam Howards shot from 12 yards was tipped around the post for a corner by home goalkeeper Ian Brown. Then in the 55th minute Kynan Isaac took the ball inside from the left to the edge of the penalty area before unleashing a fierce shot which went just inches over the bar.

Having withstood Banbury’s purple spell though Biggleswade then got to grips with the game once more and would have the better of the remainder of the half and always looked the more likelier to score at least until the final five minutes when Banbury would carve out a couple of opportunities. Firstly in the 85th minute Ian Brown did well to tip a Darius Browne shot from 12 yards around the post for a corner and then in stoppage time a cross into the danger area from a free-kick taken from wide on the left by Abdellah led to an almighty scramble in the Biggleswade penalty area but despite the obvious panic in the home defence United were unable to put the ball into the back of the net.

So the game ended 0-0 and overall that was probably a fair result. This was in many respects a decent performance from United, one couldn’t fault the effort. Except for the performance of Leigh Bedwell in the Banbury goal which was excellent, admittedly there was not a lot of quality on show from either side though the hard pitch and windy conditions made it difficult. A point away to Biggleswade would be considered a fair enough result in most circumstances but, in the position that United are in, it probably needed to be more.
