David Shadbolt

Late goal earns Paulton Rovers the three points and leaves United in deeper trouble at the bottom end of the table

This was a game in which Paulton began the better of the two sides and the first decent opportunity would come their way in the 11th minute when a goal-kick from Kyle Phillips was headed on at the half way line by Mitchell Page. This was not dealt with well by the home defence enabling Page who ran on to pick the ball up midway inside the Banbury half before taking it to the edge of the penalty area and shooting across Bedwell only to see the ball go just wide of the far post.

Two minutes later a Hicham Abdellah in-swinging free-kick from wide on the left was met by the head of Marvin Martin on the six yard line but under pressure from defenders he was unable to direct the ball wide of Phillips and the custodian collected comfortably.

In the 28th minute Banbury’s best effort of the half saw Carl Tappin’s lofted shot from wide on the left on the edge of the penalty area have the visiting goalkeeper back-peddling in desperation but the ball went just inches over the bar.

On 36 minutes Jon Davies got on to the end of a long ball down the middle from Jordan Walker and though the Paulton man did well to create an opportunity his shot from 10 yards on the left hand side of the penalty area did not have enough power to unduly trouble Bedwell who smothered the ball low down to this left.

Whilst decent chances were few and far between in the first half they were virtually non- existent in the first 40 minutes of the second half which looked like being one of the most drab halfs of football seen at the Spencer Stadium for some time.

However, the game burst into life five minutes from time when a a cross from the right by Paulton substitute Liam Monelle found its way through to Sam Teale at the far post whose shot from 12 yards looked destined for the back of the net until Bedwell brought out a superb save by deflecting the ball over the bar for a corner.

However, this was a short reprieve for United as from the resultant right sided flag-kick taken by Davies the ball was headed home at the far post by Teale into the top corner of the net.

This was a game that neither side deserved to win but it was Paulton who found the net late on to earn them the three points. For United, with the two sides immediately above them picking up a point, chances of getting out of the bottom three are looking very remote. It is not over until the fat lady sings but some supporters were adamant that she could be heard warming up her voice!
