United keep their hopes of avoiding relegation alive with a convincing 3-0 win at Burnham

This was a game that saw Banbury start the better of the two sides and as the half developed they dominated proceedings. They created enough opportunities to have been comfortably ahead at the interval but a lack of ability to finish and some genuine bad luck meant that the ball would not go into the back of the net and so at half time it was goalless.

One could have forgiven United supporters for thinking, after some recent performances, that it might be the proverbial “different game” in the second half but that was not the case and Banbury were soon dominant, even more so than in the first half.

United would finally take the lead on 56 minutes when an excellent cross from the right by the impressive Milton Keynes Dons loanee Jacob Daffern was slotted home by Leam Howards from the edge of the six yard box after an initial shot had been saved by Brendan Haslett in the Burnham goal.

On the hour mark a Kynan Isaac corner from the left saw Tom Fishwick get his head to the ball six yards out but the custodian, without looking as though he knew much about it, managed to deflect the ball away for a corner. However, just two minutes later and it was 2-0 to Banbury when an indirect free kick ten yards out, given for dangerous play, was knocked a few inches across by Isaac to Jordan Green who struck the ball low into the corner of the net.

Banbury did have a scare on 66 minutes when Burnham hit the post but the points were effectively sealed just four minutes later when a high cross from the right by Daffern was allowed to go through his hands by Haslett and Luke Cray smashed the ball home from close range off the underside of the crossbar.

Biggleswade Town winning at home to Cirencester Town today means United’s chances of avoiding a bottom three place, and with it relegation, still look slim but the fat lady is not singing yet and at least this convincing success ends a run of five league games without a win and will raise confidence levels ahead of Monday’s trip to Redditch United.
