Banbury’s players deserved total praise for the restraint shown during this Bank Holiday battle at Lye Meadow on Monday afternoon. With Barwell playing their midweek games on a Monday evening, this gave the Alvechurch management and players the chance to get a good look at Banbury the previous week.
United were unlucky in the 37th minute when home ‘keeper Charlie Woods made a fantastic point blank save from a fierce drive by George Ball from a narrow angle. As Banbury’s guile grew, in the 1st minute of time-added-on, Harry Reilly took the ball up the right touchline and when he sent in the dangerous cross, that man Pearce smashed the ball into his own net to give the Puritans a half-time lead!
The second-half looked no different to the first as far as the pattern of play was concerned. Ten minutes to go and Banbury’s Connor Ferguson was red-carded by the referee. The Puritans held on for the win, making it six points from six within a three day period.
