Banbury United 8 v Bashley 0 - 19 Sep - The Eight Goals
By David Shadbolt

Banbury United 8 Bashley 0

David Shadbolt

United hit eight and it is the club's biggest winning margin in a league game for over 50 years!

Remarkably for the first rather uneventful 25 minutes there was nothing between the sides and this gave no hint of the score-line that would eventually follow.

However, on 25 minutes United would take the lead. Callum White cut the ball back from the right bye-line into the path of Mark Bell and though his shot was saved by Nic Jones in the Bashley goal the rebound fell to White on the edge of the six yard box who knocked the ball home.

Two minutes later a low 30 yard drive from Bell came back off the post but United would not have to wait long for their second goal as on the half hour mark a shot from Bell from the edge of the area found its way into the back of the net off the visiting custodian.

On 36 minutes it was 3-0 when a superb 25 yard free-kick from Bell cleared the wall and flew into the top corner of the net.

Bell completed his hat-trick in the 44th minute with a low drive from two yards outside the Bashley penalty area on the right which saw the ball go into the bottom far corner of the net.

There was still time for United to add a fifth before the interval as in the second minute of stoppage time Bell laid the ball back for Duran Martin who shot from 25 yards, the ball flying over Nic Jones into the top corner of the net.

United increased their lead in the 54th minute when an interchange of passes down the left between Bell and Zac McEachran saw the latter beat Jones from eight yards.

Four minutes later a low cross from the right hand bye-line from Nic Evangelinos was knocked into the back of the net by the incoming Louis Joyce from close range.

Ten minutes from time it was 8-0 when Martin put Evangelinos through on goal who, in his last game for the club before going back to University, lobbed the stranded goalkeeper from 12 yards.

The scoreline was rather harsh on Bashley who battled away and tried to play football throughout with the referee having a trouble free afternoon in not booking anyone from either side. But this was a day in which the United players found their shooting boots.
