Wimborne Town 0 Banbury United 2

David Shadbolt

United put in an impressive performance as they dominate the game from start to finish for a comfortable win, with Darius Browne notching a brace.

Manager Mike Ford opted for the same starting XI that had done duty at Bashley but with Zac McEachran ill there was a space on the bench for recent squad addition 16 year-old Lester Davies, a forward/winger who played for the Oxford City U16 side last season.

United had the better of the early stages and were soon dominating the game. In the sixth minute a cross by Darius Browne was headed just over the bar by Ricky Johnson. Wimborne though defended gallantly as the half wore on, though offering nothing going forward.

Banbury went very close on the half hour mark when a long kick down field by goalkeeper Jack Harding set Mark Bell through on goal who took the ball inside the Wimborne penalty area on the right before shooting across the advancing Shane Murphy from 15 yards only to be unfortunate to see his effort strike the far post and come out. Just a minute later a cross from the right by Bell saw Johnson at the far post head just over.

A goal for Banbury was looking imminent and it duly arrived in the 34th minute when a cross from the right by Bell was nodded down by Johnson to Browne who knocked the ball home from six yards.

Banbury finished the half on top, as they had been throughout the first 45 minutes, with George Nash in the final minute firing just over the bar from 22 yards.

Banbury were not quite so dominant early in the second half but were soon back in control. On 56 minutes a free-kick pumped into the Wimborne penalty area was only cleared as far as Ollie Stanbridge who fired the ball just over from 22 yards out. Three minutes later a Bell free-kick from just outside the penalty area on the left went just inches wide of the near post.

A minute later though and the second goal that United were threatening arrived when Felipe Barcelos took a quick throw-in to Bell who took the ball in from the right before crossing low to Browne who back-heeled the ball home from five yards out for his second goal of the game.

The last 30 minutes were comfortable for Banbury as they controlled the game to see it out and collect the three points which moves them up to third place.
