Mangotsfield began the better of the two sides and in the sixth minute a cross from the right was headed just wide by Lewis Shipp and then on the quarter of an hour mark a Ben Bament shot from the edge of the penalty area was well held by Banbury goalkeeper Jack Harding. A minute later a cross from the right was met at the far post this time by Rickie Scott but his header back across Harding went wide.
Banbury’s first promising move came in the 17th minute when Ricky Johnson nicked the ball through to Leam Howards but the United striker’s attempted shot over Kyle Phillips in the Mangotsfield goal was not high enough to seriously trouble the custodian.
Mangotsfield continued to have the better of the game and looked the more likely to score. On 24 minutes a long range effort from Matt Groves went just over the bar.
However in the 39th minute, it would be Banbury who would make the breakthrough when an excellent low cross from the right by Miles Welch-Hayes was turned into his own net, under pressure from Howards, from five yards out by Scott Brice.
Thus though Banbury had been second best throughout the first half, they went in at the interval with a 1-0 lead.
The second half began with Mangotsfield on top once more and Banbury were grateful to Welch-Hayes in the 50th minute who kicked a goal-bound shot by Matt Groves off the line.
On 65 minutes Mangotsfield went close again when a corner from the left fell to Scott Brice on the edge of the Banbury penalty area whose shot went just over the bar.
In the 70th minute a good run forward from Zac McEachran ended with his shot being blocked by a defender and though the loose ball then fell to Ricky Johnson, United’s leading goalscorer shot wide from a narrow angle.
A minute later an Olly Mehew shot from the edge of the Banbury penalty area brought out an excellent finger-tip save from Harding.
Banbury’s best spell of the game would come in the final five minutes. In the 87th minute a corner from the left found its way through to Ricky Johnson who shot for goal from just five yards out on the right hand side of the six yard box, only to see Phillips make an excellent save at the expense of a corner. That corner from the right taken by Darius Browne saw an Andy Gunn header from six yards headed away off the line by a Mangotsfield defender.
This was a game that Mangotsfield will feel they should have at least got something from and perhaps should have won and that is difficult to argue against. But Banbury to their credit did keep most of the Mangotsfield shots to fairly long range and with the home side seemingly having left their shooting boots at home it is now ten consecutive league wins for Banbury and the three points keeps them top of the table.
