Remarkably considering the final scoreline, it would be United who would take the lead in the seventh minute when a low cross from Ricky Johnson from inside the Taunton penalty area on the right was sliced into the top of his own net at the six yard line by Owen Irish.
However just four minutes later a superb 25 yard strike into the bottom corner of the net from Jordan Rogers drew the hosts level.
On 19 minutes United went close to regaining the lead when a Zac McEachran free-kick from the left saw Ricky Johnson at the far post head the ball against the post from a narrow angle. Seconds later a Darius Browne cross from the left and this time Johnson at the far post hit the side netting.
As the half progressed though Taunton would begin to have the better of the game and it was not a total surprise when they took the lead in the 39th minute. The ball came in from the right and Jamie Price headed the ball forward into the path of Rogers who with just Harding to beat competently slotted the ball home into the net.
Just four minutes later and it was 3-1 when following a push in the penalty area Lewis Powell converted the resultant spot-kick.
Just a minute into the second half and the game was effectively over as a contest when Rogers let fly speculatively from 40 yards out wide on the left with Harding seemingly surprised with the ball sailing over him into the top of the net.
It was 5-1 in the 54th minute when Craig Veal headed home a Rogers cross. Two minutes later and Banbury went close when a free-kick from Mark Bell was headed against the crossbar by Johnson from 10 yards.
Taunton’s sixth goal would arrive in the 79th minute when a superb strike from Veal 25 yards out hit the post before nestling into the back of the net.
The evening got worse for Banbury in the 76th minute when Andy Gunn received a straight red card for a poor tackle which will mean a three game suspension starting with the Tiverton game.
A minute later and Taunton completed the scoring when Veal completed his hat-trick to make the final score 7-1.
It was a strange game as for the first 30 minutes there was no indication that there would be such a large winning margin but Banbury came up against a Taunton side that were on this night ruthless in front of goal once they had their noses in front. So the ten game winning run comes to an end against an impressive Taunton side particularly going forward and United now have to get this result out of the system in time for the away game at Slimbridge on Saturday.
