Banbury take first minute lead but Chesham hit back to win 2-1

Banbury United took the lead after just 35 seconds of the game as a cross from the left by Simeon Williams was slotted home by Ollie Stanbridge at the far post.

Banbury continued to have the better of the early stages of the game. On 12 minutes a cross from the right was headed on target by Sam Youngs but Shane Gore in the Chesham goal was in the right place to save his effort. On 20 minutes Simeon Williams had a good opportunity to increase Banbury's lead but his attempted lob shot lacked the power and height to trouble Gore. Chesham had though by now worked their way into the game and were now asking some serious questions of the Banbury defence and the game became very open.

On 25 minutes a good passing move finished with Williams put through with another good chance but his shot was saved by the advancing Chesham goalkeeper. Certainly there was no sitting back on their one goal lead by Banbury as they continued to push forward but Chesham were now looking dangerous in their attacks and it was no surprise when in the 33rd minute a Bruce Wilson cross from the left fell nicely for Leon Archer who struck the ball from around ten yards past Andy Kemp for the equaliser.

As the half progressed Chesham started to come into the game, and in the 33rd minute Bruce Wilson seized on a loose ball on the left edge of the home area and crossed low to Leon Archer who lifted the ball into the top corner of the net from ten yards.

Just three minutes later Chesham should have gone in front when Kemp, fully committed, brought down a Leon Archer on the far left hand side of his penalty area. However the spot-kick taken by Simon Thomas was well saved by Kemp low down to his left.

Chesham looked the more likely of the sides to score early in the second period. They began to control the game and on 60 minutes a Danny Talbot free kick into the penalty area was met by Mark Lambert and his looping header dropped over Kemp and into the net.

Chesham were now controlling the game and it took a good save by Kemp from Archer on 67 minutes to keep the deficit to a single goal. Banbury now struggled to penetrate Chesham going forward and struggled to create chances.

Banbury did apply some considerable pressure in the last five minutes. A good effort by Wiiliams in the last minute looked goalbound until the ball took a wicked deflection first off a defender and then off the goalkeeper before going just going over the bar.

Banbury had their chances to extend their lead in the first 25 minutes of the game but overall Chesham responded well to their early set-back and certainly on their second half performance looked a very good side.
