Puritans denied victory by late goal

As the fog descended on Dales Lane Stadium, Banbury soon took control from the starting whistle, and proceeded to play some lovely entertaining football, even if it was difficult to view through the misty conditions, and again, it was hard to see how on earth United failed to take all three points back to Oxfordshire, after dominating play for most of the game. As early as the second minute, a left-wing cross found Claudio Dias, but his side-footed effort crashed against the crossbar, with home 'keeper Jonathan Flatt well beaten. Shortly afterwards he made a good save from Giorgio Rasulo as Banbury ran the home side ragged.

Rushall had an attack on the 5th minute which resulted in Jonathan Letford heading harmlessly over the bar from a Levi Rowley cross, but this was little respite for the home side as they had to thank their 'keeper again in the 11th minute when he saved from Rasulo once more, after brilliant play by the speedy Craig Fasanmade on the right bye-line. Two minutes later, and United again hit the woodwork, this time when a 15-yard screamer from John Mills thudded against the inside of the post, but then somehow rebounded away from the goal, again with Flatt well beaten.

Banbury were now playing some of the best football seen all season, and went close again in the 29th minute with a fantastic move started by Rasulo who moved forward into the penalty area, and played the ball to Fasanmade. He cleverly back-heeled the ball into the path of Rasulo who let fly, but his goal-bound effort was charged down by Flatt for another good save. With United well on top, Mills went close in the 43rd minute when Flatt made another good save, following a corner.

The second half started with Banbury still well on top, and in particular, Kynan Isaac and Morgan Roberts started to dominate things down the left, as they drove the team forward. Rasulo again went close in the 63rd minute, but Banbury at last deservedly took the lead in the 66th minute. Isaac pushed the ball through to Morgan Roberts and he sent over a pin-point cross to the near post where Fasanmade converted the chance as he slid in bravely to just beat Flatt to the ball at the foot of the post.

This was at the very least what United deserved, as they had played some brilliant football and were a lot better than just a single goal to the good, but needlessly to say, they paid for all of their missed chances in the 87th minute when, completely against the run of play, Rushall equalised when a left wing cross found the unmarked Daniel Waldron at the far post, and he headed home with ease.
