Roberts bags brace as Puritans thump Stratford

In a fairly uneventful opening quarter of the game neither side troubled the opposing 'keeper but the vast part of possession fell to Banbury as they pressed forward on both flanks to such effect that the visitors never looked as though they were going to cause United any real bother.

However, it took a great piece of skill for the home side to open the scoring when Morgan Roberts brought the ball up the left, side-stepped his marker on the inside, and hit a powerful shot from 25 yards which left 6' 8" 'keeper Sam Lomax wrong-footed as it deflected past him to put Banbury deservedly in front.

With all of their possession it was a surprise that Banbury failed to add to their goal tally against a poor Stratford side, going in at the interval just one goal to the good. After the half-time break the visitors continued to ride their luck until the 60th minute when a faux pas between the tallest pair on the pitch, Lomax and Matthew Bower, contrived to present the ball to the goal-hungry Ravin Shamsi and he took full advantage of the situation to cleverly chip the ball over Lomax and into the empty net with an unusual but quite brilliant goal to double United's lead.

Within two minutes, substitute John Mills broke through the Stratford defence with a fine individual move which saw him jink in and out of three defenders before despatching a strong shot, which took a slight deflection from the edge of the penalty area to make the score 3-0.

Banbury's almost total domination saw them add yet another goal to their tally when they got their fourth in the 67th minute when Charlie Hawtin, on the right, sent a strong cross to the near post where Morgan Roberts got his second goal of the game, as he dived in to connect with a beautiful header, to register United's third goal in an eight-minute spell.

As the game approached the end, Mills had bad luck, seeing an effort blocked and then hitting the post with the rebound. Banbury were not to be denied though and in the first minute of injury-time, they went nap when Giorgio Rasulo, just outside the penalty area, curled a typical free-kick around the wall and inside the post to make the final score an emphatic 5-0.
