Late goals send United to defeat

In an exciting end-to-end encounter, which could have gone either way, the visitors snatched it in the last ten minutes when maybe a draw would have been a fairer result.

It was refreshing to see Club captain Ricky Johnson start his first game for over four months, following his lengthy injury, even if he was playing in an unfamiliar central defensive role.

The 9th minute brought a couple of incidents that indicated the way that the game would proceed, firstly when Ravin Shamsi went close when he tried to lob Lewis Moat in the Sports goal, but the giant 'keeper just got his fingertips to the ball, and from the resulting clearance, his United counterpart Jack Harding made a terrific save from a ten yard shot from the left to save at the near post. Banbury again went close in the 26th minute from a great move when Amer Awadh screwed the ball back from the right bye-line and Pablo Haysham's initial shot was blocked but the rebound fell back to him and he beat Moat with his second shot, only to see the ball flash a foot wide of the post. This was to be Haysham's last involvement in the game when he had to leave the field with a nasty injury after the first half-hour, to add to Banbury's mounting injury list. Shortly after this, Banbury again went close when Charlie Hawtin played the ball down the right to Awadh, who did well to play the ball across the goal, and following some 'head tennis', Sports' Paul Malone looked very relieved when Moat was in the right place at the right time to intercept his mis-placed header.

Both sides were playing some entertaining football, but Banbury were looking the more likely to break the deadlock either side of half-time, and in the 66th minute, what was probably Banbury's best chance of the game fell to Shamsi (who else?), as he rushed clear, but Moat made a fantastic save to tip the ball over the bar for a corner.

Peterborough piled the pressure on Banbury in the last quarter-hour, and the deadlock was finally broken in the 81st minute when, following a goalmouth scramble, Joshua McCammon poked the ball home from close in to put the Turbines ahead. Then with five minutes left and Banbury pushing forward, looking to get level, Sports added to the misery by getting their second when a free-kick by ex-Puritan Lewis Hilliard was converted by Joshua Moreman to complete the scoring, and send the men from Cambridgeshire home with all three points.
