United in goalless stalemate at the Spencer Stadium against Weymouth

In very windy conditions, the first fifteen minutes of the game was a forgettable affair. The first real opportunity would come the way of the visitors in the 16th minute when a Banbury free kick deep inside their own half wide on the left was taken by debutant goalkeeper Dean Snedker. The ball though went straight to Luke Winsper in the centre of the field who knocked the ball forward to Stewart Yetton, the Weymouth striker found himself through on goal with just Snedker, who had rushed back into goal, to beat but though he lofted the ball over the custodian it landed on top of the net.

Three minutes later a Banbury corner from the left taken by Scott Bridges saw shots from inside the penalty area by Adeyinka Talabi and then Leon Simpson well blocked by defenders.

In the 33rd minute Jason Matthews was equal to a well hit 30 yard strike from Kyal McNulty.

Neither side were able to create any clear opportunities in the remainder of the first half or for the first ten minutes of the second.

The closest to a goal in the game to that point would come on 58 minutes when a corner from the right taken by Scott Walker was met by the head of Michael Walker. The ball looked destined for the top of the net but Snedker did exceptionally well to deflect the shot onto the bar with the ball coming down and then being hacked clear by Leon Simpson.

This was the start of a good ten minute spell for the visitors with them having much the better of the game in this period but they were unable to find a way through the Banbury defence despite their efforts.

Banbury though then worked their way back into the contest and began once again to have an equal share of the game.

On 75 minutes a Banbury corner from the left taken by Bridges was only knocked out to Talabi whose fierce shot from a narrow angle was well held by Matthews.

Three minutes later and Banbury came closest to scoring than that they had done all game. A quick break from a Weymouth attack saw McNulty put in a long clearance which was picked up by Kynan Isaac midway inside the Weymouth half. He exchanged passes with Albi Skendi before putting in an excellent cross from the left which was met at the near post by the head of Talabi. The ball appeared to be going into the top left hand corner of the net but Matthews brought off a superb acrobatic save to palm the ball over the bar for a corner.

Both sides looked for a winner in the last ten minutes but with defences on top in this period the game finished 0-0.

On the balance of play this was a fair result.
