United's run of nine consecutive league defeats came to and end at the Spencer Stadium this afternoon though it was not with the win that looked almost certain leading 3-0 with just over a quarter of an hour left as Bashley staged a remarkable comeback to score three late goals and earn a point in a 3-3 draw.
There was a United debut for centre half Tom Fishwick who has been playing for Racing Club Warwick this season and was previously with Leamington at youth level.
The first chance of the game came in the 8th minute when a long free-kick from Marvin Martin just inside the Bashley half on the left saw Kynan Isaac run through on to the ball but his shot went just over the bar from 12 yards. Three minutes later an excellent surging run from Marcus Green from the half way line took him through right into the Bashley penalty area but his shot was then blasted over from eight yards.
Banbury continued to have much the better of the game. In the 17th minute a free-kick from wide on the right taken by Marvin Martin saw Tom Fishwick get his foot to the ball ahead of Bashley defender Luke Ansell but under pressure the ball was put over the bar from six yards. Just before the half hour mark a 30 yard shot from Tanasheh Abrahams was parried away by Nic Jones in the Bashley goal before being cleared.
In the 31st minute Isaac put Ashley Dumbleton through inside the penalty area on the right whose fierce shot was pushed away by Jones only as far as the incoming Green but the United youngster with a good chance hit the side netting.
United had had much the better of the first half, creating some decent opportunities but with none taken it was goalless at the interval.
United would make the breakthrough eight minutes into the second half. Marvin Martin passed the ball through to Albi Skendi with his back to goal in a central position about 25 yards out who then turned and bustled his way through to the edge of the Bashley penalty area before unleashing a low drive into the bottom corner of the net
Just four minutes later and Skendi returned the favour as he passed across from the right hand edge of the Bashley penalty area to an unmarked Marvin Martin who was in a central position just inside the penalty area and in the proverbial "acres of space" he drove the ball into the bottom corner of the net past a helpless Nic Jones.
On the hour mark a free-kick from the halfway line taken by Brad Strickland nearly caught Scott Dutton off his line but the United goalkeeper just got back to tip the ball over the crossbar for a corner.
On 69 minutes substitute Claudio Dias knocked the ball forward from the half way line for Adeyinka Talabi to run on to and United's leading goalscorer then got the better of Brad Strickland in a tussle and, with the Bashley man on the ground, Talabi found himself with just an exposed goalkeeper Nic Jones to beat and this he did with a lob from the edge of the penalty area. It now looked at 3-0 it looked as though the points were in the bag for Banbury.
Bashley pulled a goal back on 73 minutes when former Puritan Manny Soetan flicked the ball to Jack Odam runniing through down the right hand side of the Banbury penalty area, Bashley's leading goalscorer then competently slotting the ball home from a narrow angle.
Just two minutes later and Bashley were right back in the game when Odam ran through down the left, cut back inside and then hit a superb curling shot from just inside the Banbury penalty area into the far top corner of the net giving Dutton no chance.
In the 88th minute Bashley had a glorious chance to equalise when Sam Roberts put Soetan through on goal down the middle but with just Dutton to beat the former Banbury man managed to put the ball wide of the goal.
It looked like Banbury were going to hold out for the three points but in the fifth minute of stoppage time Scott Joyce got on to the end of a last desperate long punt forward from deep in the Bashley half and got enough on the ball to knock it home past Dutton from 12 yards to level it up at 3-3.
Ten seconds after the re-start the referee blew his whistle for the end of the game.
