Banbury United v St Albans City 19th April 2014 - The Goals
By David Shadbolt

Banbury United 1 St Albans CIty 5

David Shadbolt

United are well beaten by play-off chasers St Albans City at the Spencer Stadium

Banbury got off to the worse of starts, conceding a goal in the first minute. The ball came across the penalty area from the left and John Frendo, inside the penalty area on the right hand side, got to the ball before Luke Fathers and though the St Albans striker's shot from a narrow angle was saved by Scott Dutton the ball rebounded out to Steve Wales whose shot from five yards found the back of the net off the far post.

United appeared to have got right back into the game in the 26th minute when a corner from the right taken by Marvin Martin was headed home by Luke Fathers from 12 yards.

However, two goals in the space of four minutes from John Frendo (38 and 41 mins) put St Albans firmly back in command. The first saw a quick throw on the left to Frendo who turned sharply and hit a glorious shot from the edge of penalty area which flew into the top far corner of the net giving Dutton no chance. The second was less spectacular, but just as important for St Albans, as, in the proverbial acres of space, he knocked a James Comley cross from the right home at the far post.

Five minutes into the second half and Lee Chappell, who timed his forward run perfectly, was put through down the left inside the penalty area and he then finished neatly by dinking the ball over Dutton from five yards. This goal removed any doubt as to the result of this game and St Albans dominated the remainder of the half.

In the 66th minute a Banbury corner from the left saw Paul Bastock make an excellent save from a Luke Cray header but St Albans broke quickly and within 30 seconds it was 5-1 as James Comley, in space with United short on numbers at the back, lobbed Dutton from the edge of the penalty area.

St Albans had plenty of further chances in the remainder of the game but remarkably failed to take any so that was how the game finished.
