United went behind as early as the seventh minute when a free kick from the left taken by Josh Dawkin was knocked home in the centre by Lee Chaffey.
Just before the half hour mark it was 2-0 when Dawkin ran through from just inside the Banbury half to just outside the penalty area before driving the ball low into the corner of the net
It was 3-0 in the last minute of the first half when a low cross from James Brighton from the left was knocked home at the far post by Robbie Burns.
Whilst it was all too comfortable for City, United had a couple of decent efforts in the first half. A free kick from Albi Skendi from just outside the penalty area and a effort from Adeyinka Talabi both forced Zac Barrett into making saves.
On the hour mark it became 4-0 when Josh Beech converted a penalty. This was after Danny Kelly had been brought down by United goalkeeper Scott Dutton.
United pulled a goal back on 72 minutes when Talabi let rip from 25 yards, the ball flying into the top corner of the net giving Barrett no chance in what was arguably the best goal of the game.
City had the last word though as on 83 minutes Louis Lee was fouled a few yards outside the Banbury penalty area in a central position. The resultant free kick was expertly taken by Brighton, going over the wall into the top corner of the net for another superb goal.
The five goals conceded today makes this season defensively the worst in the club's 80 years plus history. This season's tally is 116 conceded in 44 games at an average of 2.64 per game. This exceeds the previous worst in 1964/65 of 99 in 38 games at an average of 2.61.
