Corby Town 4 Banbury United 2

David Shadbolt

This was a game played in dreadful conditions with rain and near gale force winds throughout the 90 minutes.

It took a while for either team to adapt to the conditions but after a quarter of an hour of settling in we were treated to four goals in a fifteen minute spell.

United went in front on 16 minutes when Albi Skendi shot for goal from just inside the right hand side of the penalty area, the ball going across the goalmouth before hitting the inside of the far post and then trickling back into the net with the incoming Aaron Morgan shepherding the ball home.

In the 26th minute Corby were level when a 30 yard speculative shot whizzed along the ground at speed in the very wet conditions and through Dean Snedker in the Banbury goal. Just a minute later and the home side were in front when Greg Mills broke through down the left taking the ball to inside the penalty area before slotting it past Snedker.

It would though take Banbury just three minutes to bring the scores level once more as Kynan Isaac was pulled down on the right hand edge of the penalty area, Scott Bridges stepped up to take the penalty kick and competently converted it low to the goalkeeper’s left.

The remainder of the half was lively with Mills shooting just wide of the far post from the right hand side of the penalty area and then for Banbury Marvin Martin’s long range effort taking a slight deflection and bringing out a decent save from Paul Walker.

Five minutes into the second half and Corby took a 3-2 lead when Mills once more broke through down the left and slotted the ball home for his second of the game.

Conditions continued to deteriorate as the half wore on with the ball in certain sections of the pitch getting stuck in pools of water. Whilst the game must have been close to being abandoned on a couple of occasions, it has to be said Corby dealt with those conditions much better than Banbury.

The all-important fourth goal for Corby would come just after the hour mark when Snedker failed to gather the ball low down to his right in a tussle with Tommy Wright and the home striker hooked it into the net.

The second half did see a couple of promising moments for Banbury. Skendi shot just wide from distance on 60 minutes and later Claudio Dias, on as a substitute, went on a storming run from the half way line to the just inside the Corby penalty area only to see his shot well saved by the home custodian.

The conditions that this game was played in makes it difficult to judge performance. United battled well in the first half and deserved to be level at the brake but Corby were well worth the win in the second period.
