Banbury United Women kicked off their new era on Sunday with their first pre-season friendly, welcoming Headington Ladies to the Spencer Stadium.
It was a lively and competitive opening half, with both sides creating chances.
Headington struck first, but Banbury wasted no time hitting back. Midfielder Toni produced a moment of real magic — picking the ball up inside the Headington half and letting fly from 40 metres. The strike rocketed into the net and had the home supporters on their feet, a perfect way to announce Banbury’s return.
Just before the break, Headington edged back in front, taking a 2–1 lead into half-time.
With a big squad to choose from, Banbury rotated heavily in the second half to give everyone valuable minutes.
Headington’s experience began to show as they stretched their advantage, moving 7–1 ahead. But Banbury weren’t done yet. Tasha showed her trademark determination, getting the ball over the line after good work from Ali to grab a second for the team.
There was almost time for one more twist — Banbury won a penalty in the dying seconds, but heartbreakingly the spot-kick rattled back off the post.
Despite the scoreline, there were plenty of positives on show: great energy, moments of real quality, and plenty to build on as the team grows together. Highlights to follow.
Next up, Banbury travel to Daventry Town for their next friendly, full of confidence and excitement for the season ahead. #PlayBrave
