BUFC Academy U17 secured a commanding 9-1 away victory against Portsmouth U17, though the final scoreline masked a performance that required a significant managerial intervention and a dramatic uplift in the second half.
The first half was, by all accounts, a struggle. Despite a lack of endeavour and quality on the ball, BUFC managed to find the net three times to take a 3-0 lead into the break. While the result was positive, the performance left much to be desired.
The start of the second half offered little change in pace, but a crucial moment arrived when a goalkeeper error allowed BUFC to extend the lead to 4-0. Portsmouth showed resilience, however, and pulled a goal back via a swift counter-attack. This seemed to spark the visitors into life. BUFC finally put their foot down, dominating the remainder of the game to ensure a comfortable 9-1 final result.
Manager and Opponent Reaction
Mike Ford (BUFC Manager):
"A frustrating game overall. We didn't show enough quality in the first half—we lacked energy and made poor decisions. However, the boys were much better in the second. We saw more effort, better decisions, and, crucially, more football being played. It’s a good result, but there are clear lessons here."
Opposing Coach:
"It was a difficult day for us. BUFC really put their foot down in the second half, and their quality showed. Credit to my boys, though; they kept going and never gave up despite the scoreline."
The nine goals for BUFC were distributed among six players:
• Ali G (3) - Hat-trick hero
• Kev (2)
• Mo (1)
• Mani (1)
• John (1)
• Conor (1)
