Banbury United returned to winning ways in the league with a hard-fought 3–2 victory over Stamford at home, securing their first league points since 11 August. The visitors arrived at the Spencer Stadium having lost their opening nine league matches, but despite their position at the foot of the table, they pushed United throughout an entertaining encounter and threatened a late equaliser.
Banbury started positively against a young Stamford side, with Alex Prosser, Gus Sanches and AJ George delivering a series of crosses in search of Levi Steele, who returned to the starting line-up. However, Stamford defended in numbers and made several important clearances to keep the hosts at bay during the opening 20 minutes.
Against the run of play, Stamford took the lead in the 22nd minute with their first shot of the afternoon. Sam Bayly broke forward from midfield and set up Luca Alonzi, who finished from close range to put the visitors ahead.
Banbury continued to press and were rewarded in the 35th minute. Prosser, operating on the left, sent a powerful cross-shot across the face of goal and into the far corner, bringing United level.
Two minutes later, Steele came close to putting the hosts ahead when he met an excellent cross from George on the right, but his header narrowly missed the far post.
Prosser remained a threat and came close to scoring again in the 42nd minute with a powerful 25-yard effort that struck the crossbar. Banbury appeared to have taken the lead shortly afterwards when Jacob Scott converted from close range, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Despite United’s attacking pressure, the teams went into half-time level at 1–1.
Banbury needed little time to regain the lead after the restart. Within a minute of the second half beginning, Prosser struck a superb 20-yard effort beyond goalkeeper James Goff to put the hosts 2–1 ahead.
United extended their advantage in the 49th minute. A cross from the right found Josh Cavallo just outside the penalty area on the left, and he volleyed home with his left foot, finding the far corner to make it 3–1.
Stamford responded impressively, and substitute Tyler Young reduced the deficit to 3–2 with a well-placed shot across goal into the bottom corner, just three minutes after coming on.
The goal ensured a competitive final half-hour, with both sides looking for further opportunities. Stamford continued to search for an equaliser, while Banbury worked to protect their advantage. Clear chances were limited, however, and United held on to secure a valuable three points.
There was also encouraging news for Banbury in the return of club captain Yaw Ofosu, who made his first appearance of the season and completed 80 minutes before being substituted. His return provides a further option for United as he builds up his match fitness.
Aaron McCreadie also impressed with his energy and work rate across the pitch, contributing throughout a demanding afternoon.
Ultimately, Banbury’s finishing proved decisive in a match where their attacking pressure produced three goals, although Stamford’s determination ensured the hosts had to work hard to see out the victory.
