We are delighted to introduce you to another group of supporters who have come together to sponsor a player/staff member at Banbury United. Joining The Barson Boys (Josh Flanagan) and Brian, Dickie and Steve (Yaw Ofosu) are Greg Howse, Lizzie Lucas and Lee Rodway, who have chosen to back our long-serving volunteer coach, Matty Haycocks.
The three sponsors managed to get together with Matty last Saturday at the FA Cup match at Chasetown. This is not so easy to arrange now that Greg and Lizzie have moved to Norfolk.
Greg explained, “Myself, Lizzie and Lee have known Matty for quite a few years now, mainly through Banbury United. We all feel Matty's has been a loyal member of the coaching staff to the Club despite the many ups and downs and his hard work generally goes unnoticed. For this reason, we felt it would be a great touch to sponsor him as a boost to his continued hard work and a way of showing our appreciation. We all miss his quizzes and score prediction games on away travel coaches!”
Come 2026, it will be 30 years since Matty first coached at Banbury United, under manager Ian Bowyer, for whom he also played. In total, he’s racked up 14 years of coaching for the first team, having worked with other managers including Phil Lines, Billy Jeffrey, Andy Fuller, Mike Ford and Andy Whing. And of course, for many of those years, he’s been a colleague to another stable member of the Banbury United set-up, Jack Harding.
To read more about Matty’s thoughts on his time at the Club, here is a Q&A from 2024.
Thank you Greg, Lizzie and Lee. It’s a lovely gesture.
If you are interested in supporting one of the first team staff, we have Kit Man, Ian Timms and another Club faithful, physio Jack Randall, available. Please email clairedumbreck@banburyunitedfc.co.uk for details.
